LY- Y National Highlights

Y National Awards LY Swimmer                                                                                         On Thursday, April 3rd, Collin Conrad of the Lynchburg YMCA Swim Team was awarded the National YMCA Outstanding Athlete Scholarship Award while competing with our team at the YMCA National Swimming and Diving Championship in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.  This $1000 scholarship, presented by Nike, is awarded each year to a swimmer at the meet.  This year's meet included over 1600 swimmers from all over the country.
The criteria for the award include being a YMCA swimmer for at least 5 years, maintaining a grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, and letters of recommendation that reflect the athlete's display of the YMCA character traits of caring, honesty, responsibility, and respect.  Collin is ranked first in his class at Brookville High School and achieved a Junior National Qualifying time in the 200 yard breaststroke at this year’s meet.  He has swum with LY for the last 8 years.  WAY TO GO COLLIN!

More Highlights

Besides Collin winning the huge prize, there was some excellent swimming that went on in Ft. Lauderdale as well.  Collin’s 5th place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke was a USAS Junior National qualifying time.  Jamie Chong scored in the 1000 yard freestyle with a 16th place finish while Susanna White rocked in the 200 IM placing 4th.  Jason Brame was in the money in the 1000 yard freestyle with a 13th place finish, and finished 11th in both the 1650 yard freestyle and 400 yard IM.  Travis Stauder placed 6th in the 200 IM after a swim off for 8th place in the morning.  Travis also finished 4th in the 100 yard breaststroke and 3rd in the 200 yard breaststroke.                                                                                                                                                                                    Amber Wingfield smashed the Y National qualifying time in her 200 yard breaststroke time trial, while Carter Watson picked up the 200 yard freestyle time.                                                                                                                                                                                          Nick Gorman sheared off over a second in his 1650 yard freestyle, Phil nicked a bit off his 1000 yard freestyle, and Kemp Pettyjohn dropped time in his 500 yard freestyle and his 1650 yard freestyle. LY combined to finish in 18th place – not too shabby for a meet with 230 teams!                                                                                         Kemp lost his wallet, Chad Nowakowski abandoned his pillow, Carter killed cockroaches for the girls, half the team’s luggage didn’t make the flight home, and everyone learned the true story of Anne Boleyn’s beheading.  All in all, it was a great trip.  We are already booked with Gigi’s for next year, who else is coming?
